The name Jesus comes from the Greek Iesous which was derived from the Aramaic, Yeshu. It means “Yahweh is salvation.” Every Catholic should love and have great devotion to the Most Holy Name of JESUS, for this is the Name of our Divine Savior. More than that, this Name is our very Salvation:
“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
The Holy Name of Jesus saves us from innumerable evils and delivers us especially from the power of the devil who is constantly seeking to do us harm. The Name of Jesus gradually fills our souls with a peace and a joy we never had before.
“As children, the Sisters of Mercy taught us to bow our head whenever we heard the name of Jesus or said His name ourselves. This pious practice has not been promoted by the “Renewed Church of the Modernists.” Children are no longer taught to do this and as they grow into adults and have children of their own, they are unaware of it.
Jesus’ name is known far and wide, but as a word with which to swear profanely. His Name is blasphemed, He is depicted as a homosexual doing unspeakable things to His Own Body, His Mother’s perpetual virginity is disdained and so forth. Our culture is strewn with the garbage of sacrilege. If only souls knew the riches of just uttering the Sweet Name of Jesus with reverence and wonder, and the happiness which that Name brings to souls so disposed.” [Ref: catholictradition.org]
The Golden Arrow Prayer
May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most mysterious and unutterable Name of God be always praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified in heaven on earth and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ in the most Holy Sacrament of the altar.
This prayer is said to have been revealed by Jesus Himself to a Carmelite Nun of Tours in 1843 as a reparation for blasphemy. “This Golden Arrow will wound My Heart delightfully,” He said, “and heal the wounds inflicted by blasphemy.”
Prayer to the Holy Name – St. Alphonsus
O my Jesus, thou art the Savior who hast given Thy blood and Thy life for me,
I pray Thee to write Thy adorable name on my poor heart;
so that having it always imprinted in my heart by love,
I may also have it ever on my lips, by invoking it in all my necessities.
If the devil tempts me, Thy name will give me strength to resist him;
if I lose confidence, Thy name will animate me to hope;
if I am in affliction, Thy name will comfort me, by reminding me of all Thou hast endured for me.
If I find myself cold in Thy love, Thy name will inflame me by reminding me of the love Thou hast shown me.
I have fallen into so many sins, because I did not call on Thee;
from henceforth Thy name shall be my defense, my refuge, my hope, my only consolation, my only love.
Thus do I hope to live, and so do I hope to die, having Thy name always on my lips.

Prayer to the Holy Name – St. Bernardine of Siena
Jesus, Name full of glory, grace, love and strength! You are the refuge of those who repent, our banner of warfare in this life, the medicine of souls, the comfort of those who morn, the delight of those who believe, the light of those who preach the true faith, the wages of those who toil, the healing of the sick.
To You our devotion aspires; by You our prayers are received; we delight in contemplating You. O Name of Jesus, You are the glory of all the saints for eternity. Amen.
Prayer Petition to the Holy Name of Jesus
God, You appointed Your only-begotten Son to be the Savior of mankind, and You commanded His Name to be Jesus. I beg that a most ardent love of Your Divine Son imprint that Name upon my heart; that it always be on my mind, and frequently on my lips; that it be my defense in temptation, my refuge in danger, and my consolation and strength in the hour of my death.

Oremus. O Lord Jesus Christ, Who has said: Ask and ye shall receive; seek,and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: grant, we beseech Thee, to us who ask the grace of Thy most divine love, that we may love Thee with all our hearts, words and works, and never cease to praise Thee. Make us, O Lord, to have a continual fear and love of Thy holy Name; for Thou never ceasest to rule and govern those whom Thou doest solidly establish in Thy love. Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. (Amen.) |
According to the Traditional Missal, the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus is a feast of the liturgical year and celebrated on January 2nd.
If we wish to see our names written in heaven under the glorious name of Jesus (Postcommunion), that name must be often on our lips here below. An indulgence of twenty days may be gained by all who bow the head with reverence when speaking or hearing the names of Jesus and Mary, while Pope St Pius X granted 300 days to those who piously invoke them with the lips, or at least in the heart.
For it is written: “As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” [Romans 14:11]

VIRGÓ SACRÁTA is a Christian mission-driven online resource and shop inspired from the beauty of Catholic faith, tradition, and arts. Our mission is to “Restore All Things to Christ!”, in continuing the legacy of Pope St. Pius X under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary. “Who is she that cometh forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in battle array?” O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee.
